Department Department of Physiology
Introduction The major research topic of the Department of Physiology is ¡°neuroscience, immunity and clinical application of physiology.¡± Especially, we focus on the research dealing with brain diseases, sepsis and its application in diagnosis, therapeutics and health care system. As the heir of our former department, department of physiology, we continue to work on physiology in the field of clinical medicine and related fields. In the future, we wish to expand our scope further. Currently we are working on the following fields:

1. Neurodegeneration & Stem Cells
- Regulation of sphingolipid metabolism in aging and neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease and Niemann-Pick type C disease. The studies include molecular, biological, physiological and pathophysiological studies of sphingolipid metabolism in brain, blood, bone marrow and other organs. - Understanding and regulation of neural and bone marrow stem cell niche in normal and pathological condition. The studies focus on the establishment of original technology and development of stem cell therapeutics for neurodegenerative disease, osteoporosis, cancer, and other diseases. - Disease modeling of neurodegenerative disease using induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) technology. The studies include investigating disease development and models in vitro, as well as examining pathophysiology and testing therapeutic agents.

2. Healthcare system
- U-healthcare system: research to develop a system consisting of molecular diagnosis based point of care health device, monitoring system for physiologic or vital signs, mobile medical network, artificial intelligence medical system to take care of brain injury patients
- Health promoting or aid system for disabled people

3. Innate immunity
- Studies on the function of innate immune cells in various disease: research on the function of innate immune cells in inflammatory disease, cancer, and metabolic disease.
- Basic research on innate immune cells: research on the basic functions such as chemotaxis, bactericidal activity, and immuno-modulatory roles of innate immune cells.
