The Department of Microbiology is proud of the contribution to the eradication of cholera, shigella, and typhoid fever in Korea during the 1950s and 1990s. The department has continuously emphasized the importance of studies on the antibiotic resistance, since antibiotics cannot overcome the bacterial infection in human patients. Currently, the following topics have mainly been studied: 1) antibiotic resistance induced by bacteria – characteristics, underlying mechanisms, and propagation; 2) pathogenic mechanisms of pathogenic bacteria; 3) immune responses to pathogens; and 4) identification and application of bacteriophage for eradication of human pathogens.
